We recommend rebooting your machine after the update.

A special thanks goes out to our users who downloaded our beta build and submitted their comments and bugs.  We appreciate your continued support and dedication.

iPad, uPad, we all scream for iPad!

For those of you lucky enough to get your hands on one of these great new toys, can I be your friend?  Actually, we received our iPad today here at ZumoDrive HQ.  I don’t need to tell you how many fingerprints are now covering that beautiful screen.  Of course the first thing we did was install ZumoDrive. *wink wink*  I’m happy to say that the ZumoDrive app for the iPhone works great on the iPad.  So those of you who are already running out of space (probably because you’ve bought so many games and movies) can save a good portion of it by streaming all your music and photos via ZumoDrive.  I won’t lie though, the interface isn’t the prettiest thing due to having to stretch it out on that GIANT screen,  but it’s very usable.  Is ZumoDrive planning on building an app for the iPad?  One that is really pretty and amazing?  You’ll have to wait and see.  *sneaky grin*

ZumoDrive Contest Winners - Finale!

Now the moment you’ve all been waiting for.  Who came in first in the ZumoDrive Interesting Use Case Contest?  We are proud to present:

David Meredith!

David is a school teacher who uses ZumoDrive to sync his classroom data files between his home and school PCs.  By doing this he is able to work from school or home without having to use a USB drive, or burn a CD.  But this isn’t what won the contest for him since it’s a pretty standard use case.  I remember when I was in school (yes, I’m old), and the network would go down.  Back then, when this happened, we could sit around and do nothing.  Teachers couldn’t get their email or their files.  Class would just come to a grinding halt until the network came back up.  Unfortunately for David’s students, he starts up ZumoDrive on his iPhone and class continues.  He even goes as far as to hook up his iPhone to a projector in order to view PowerPoint presentations.  We liked how David uses ZumoDrive not only to backup and sync his files, but how it also functions as a backup for classroom operations.

Congratulations David!  We have added 25GB to your account.  I’m just glad iPhones and ZumoDrive didn’t exist when I was in school.  :P

ZumoDrive Contest Winners - Third Movement

Welcome back from the 24 hour intermission.  We’re ready to kick off the third movement of the ZumoDrive Interesting Use Case Contest symphony!  The featured soloist today is:

Veronica Ng

Veronica communicates with her clients over instant messenger.  She keeps logs of all of the conversations she has with them, allowing her to go over the contents later or just to look up certain facts.  The logs are saved to a folder on ZumoDrive.  This makes them easily accessible to her anywhere she goes, no matter what platform she is on (mainly Mac or PC).  As a collective of nerds and geeks here at ZumoDrive, you can imagine how much instant messaging goes on between us and our friends.  I personally have found Veronica’s use case extremely useful since my messaging client can now read off the same logs on both my Mac and PC.

Congratulations to our second place winner Veronica!  We have added 25GB to your account.  I hope your IM logs don’t fill this space up quickly.

ZumoDrive Contest Winners - Part Deux

The third place prize in the ZumoDrive Interesting Use Case Contest goes to (drum roll):

Stuart Sequeira!!

Stuart’s case appealed to us on the domestic front.  His family runs many computers that are on different floors, spread all over his house.  As many of us have experienced, WiFi isn’t always the most reliable technology when travelling across different floors of the home.  And the sharing of files between family members and their computers is always a fun challenge (especially if your mom is as good at breaking even the most fool proof computer as mine is).

On top of all this Stuart is running different operating systems.  He uses ZumoDrive to share the same files across all the computer in his home.  No matter what operating system, or how iffy the WiFi is (updates whenever it gets a connection), ZumoDrive will have the latest files ready for him and his family to access.  He pointed out that ZumoDrive allows him to do so without having to setup a complex home network.  Another good point Stuart made was that adding a new computer to the house is made drastically easier since his files all appear once he installs ZumoDrive.

Congratulations to Stuart and his family!  The 25GB of space has been added to your account and is well earned.

ZumoDrive Contest Winners - Part 1

So I got the ZumoDrive team together and we read through all the interesting use cases for ZumoDrive that were submitted by our users.  This was great fun for us since it showed how many great ways people had come up with to make ZumoDrive work for them in their lives.  It was a pretty close race between most of the entries.  Some were duplicates however and thus less interesting (that doesn’t mean they weren’t awesome ideas though!).  When I posted up this contest there was only going to be three winners.  That is still the case, however it was so close that I have decided to add an Honorable Mention.  They will receive 10gb of space.  I will be posting them up in ascending order daily starting today with the Honorable Mention winner:

Karl Martin Karlsson’s case was a great one for many of us here at the office.  John and I in particular try to have photography as a hobby (“try” being operative here).  Karl uses ZumoDrive to share the photos he takes from his travels to multiple computers.  He uploads them to a folder on ZumoDrive then runs a program that changes his desktop wallpapers on a set schedule.  From there, he just installs that program on each of his computers and points it to the folder on ZumoDrive.  Voila!  He can enjoy all his photos from all the computers he uses.

Congratulations Karl!  We have added 10GB to your account.

Everyone, stay tuned tomorrow for the 3rd place winner!

Testers?...Testers?...Bueller?

We know we have a lot of devoted ZumoDrive fans out there, many of whom share a synonymous passion and dream.  They dream of a world where files are freed from the shackles that bind them to singular location.  A world where the files are free to be shared, where the folders they live in are linked, where music and video are streamed at will.  The list could go on and on.  In the end, a free world for their files.

As we all know, freedom comes at a price.  We are looking for these dare-to-dream users to help us with our cause.  Users who enlist in this endeavor will be part of a collective.  A collective that will receive the latest, most brazen beta build of the ZumoDrive client.  Their objective:  To take ZumoDrive to its limits and report back, in detail, about any transgressions that may transpire.  Do you feel up to the task?

For those of you who didn't want to read through that garbage (who writes that crap anyways?):

We here at ZumoDrive are calling out to our passionate users who would like to run our latest builds and provide us with feedback.  If you would like to be one of these users please enlist here:

Your ZumoDrive thanks you for your support!

"Sometimes you have to roll a hard six."

We've received several inquiries about how ZumoDrive stores its users' data and what the security is like.  Just in case someone is storing the secret location of Earth for when the Cylons attack, we're here to tell you how safe and secure ZumoDrive is.  Cloud storage is a great way to store your data.  Since the Galactica does not allow any of their computers to be networked between each other, pulling down your data from the internet (i.e. the cloud) is perfect.  When aboard the Battlestar Galactica and connecting to ZumoDrive, here is the path your files will take:

1.  The file being uploaded is transferred to the ZumoDrive server which is hosted by Amazon's EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud).  It is done via 256-bit SSL encryption.  SSL is the same type of encryption used when you log into your bank's secure website.  The EC2 is the workhorse.  It's the liaison between the client on your computer and the ZumoDrive datacenter (which is hosted by Amazon S3; more on this below).  It also services the ZumoDrive website.

2.  The EC2 then does 2 things to your file:

    A.  It creates metadata (filename, username, file size, file type, share permissions, etc.) and sends it to our database.  This allows you to quickly look through your files without having to load the contents of the files.

    B.  It encrypts your actual file via 256-bit AES encryption and stores it on S3 (Simple Storage Service).  AES is military grade encryption.

3.  S3 is just a giant warehouse of data.  Once your file hits the S3 server it is replicated multiple times and stored in multiple datacenters.  Each datacenter is in a different geographical location.  Your file will sit there (still AES encrypted of course) until you decide to retrieve it.

So as you can see, the Cylons have many hurdles to overcome in order to take over ZumoDrive and your data.  They would have to crack different types of encryptions, and when that fails and they want to just destroy the data, it would require a large blanket of nuclear explosions over a large area.  This is of course not including having to duke it out with the mighty BSG and its crew.  So say we all!!
