To retrieve your data stored on ZumoDrive, we strongly recommend you take action as soon as possible. All you have to do is:

1. Get the ZumoDrive downloader tool from here:

2. Log in with your ZumoDrive account within the ZumoDrive downloader

3. Choose a location on your hard drive to save all of your ZumoDrive files

* Make sure that you have enough space on your hard drive for everything in your ZumoDrive account.

Wed, 22 Dec 2010 06:43:16 -0800 Zecter Acquired by Motorola Mobility http://blog.zumodrive.com/zecter-acquired-by-motorola-mobility http://blog.zumodrive.com/zecter-acquired-by-motorola-mobility We are pleased to announce that we will be joining the Motorola Mobility family! When we started the company three years ago, we set out to change the way people accessed and shared their personal content. Over the last two years, we've had the opportunity to create two innovative products that give users a better way to consume content across devices: ZumoDrive (cloud storage and sync) and ZumoCast (personal media streaming).

After meeting the folks at Motorola, we quickly realized that they share a very similar vision. They also realize that with the proliferation of mobile devices today, it's more important than ever to create a seamless way for people to share content across multiple devices. We feel that together with Motorola's brand and distribution, we are in a better position than ever to realizing our vision. We are excited to be working together with Motorola to bring all your content to all your devices.

So what does this mean for the various Zecter services?

ZumoDrive will continue operation exactly as it is today. We will also be continuing to support and improve upon the iOS, Android and WebOS platforms.

ZumoCast software distribution has been temporarily suspended while we make several enhancements. We will be working to bring back the download as quickly as we can. All existing users can continue using the service without disruption. You can sign up to be notified when the download link returns on our home page: http://www.zumocast.com.

Similarly to ZumoDrive, we will continue to support and improve ZumoCast on the iOS platform. We'll also be exploring additional platforms in the near future.
Our main goal at Zecter has always been to provide your content wherever you are, and that goal will not be changing. Motorola shares our vision, and we look forward to working with them to expand and enhance our current offerings.

Wed, 08 Dec 2010 15:54:00 -0800 ZumoDrive Tip of the Week: Share Single Files with Links http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumodrive-tip-of-the-week-share-files-with-li http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumodrive-tip-of-the-week-share-files-with-li

Most of you are well aware of our sharing via email feature in ZumoDrive.  It's very useful when you're sharing entire folders with your friends, family, and colleagues.  While this is a great way to share folders, it's not the easiest and most efficient way to share single files.  You'll notice that when you open up the sharing window (on the desktop client), the first tab is getting a link, and the second is to add an email.  When sharing single files, it's far more effective to just get a link and send that to the other user.  Here are the steps to do so:

  1. Right click on the file you wish to share.  Select "ZumoDrive - Share...".
  2. When the window pops up, click on the "Get Link" button.  You will see a URL created right below it.
  3. Click on the "Copy to clipboard" button then close the window.
  4. Paste the link into the email, instant message, Facebook/Twitter status, or any other document you are sending.

It's as easy as that!  All the other user has to do is click on the link you sent and it will bring them to a page where they can download the file.

Note:  You can also create links to files via our web interface.  When you click on a file, the sidebar to the right will have an option for you to create a link.  This is a very helpful option when you’re not on your own machine, yet still wish to share your files on the go.

Thu, 02 Dec 2010 16:21:00 -0800 Streaming Via ZumoCast http://blog.zumodrive.com/streaming-via-zumocast http://blog.zumodrive.com/streaming-via-zumocast

Many users have sent in support tickets and commented on our forums about the various system requirements that ZumoCast needs in order to achieve smooth playback of their videos.  To answer that question you must line up three variables:  CPU/RAM, video source, and bandwidth.

Most off-the-shelf PCs out there today meet the minimum specs necessary for ZumoCast to transcode your video.  Officially we say that a 2GHz Dual-Core machine with 500MB of free RAM is what is needed to transcode videos at a good rate.  The important thing here is to make sure your computer has the processing power to convert your video as it is playing.  The faster of a computer you have, the quicker it is able to do so and stay ahead of the streaming.

One factor that plays a pretty major role in this is your video source.  More and more videos are now being broadcast and recorded in HD (High Definition).  If you are capturing video with your new phone in HD (along with many other devices such as point and shoot cameras), chances are, it is recording at 720p (resolution of 1280x720).  As a comparison, most DVD movies run at 480p (resolution of 720x480), and most Blu-Ray movies will be at 1080p (resolution of 1920x1080).  Setting aside the geek talk, it basically means the higher the number, the higher quality picture you are going to get (more pixels).  However, that does come at a price.  The higher the number also means the file size is much larger and it will take more CPU power to convert it on the fly.

The other factor to consider is your internet bandwidth.  Most internet provider plans give their users a MUCH faster download rate than upload.  In fact, chances are your download speed is around five times faster than your upload.  Remember that since ZumoCast is streaming from your computer, all that matters is how fast your upload speed is.  We recommend a minimum upload connection of 384kbps.  The quicker the connection, the larger the file we can stream to your device, which will mean the higher the quality of video you will get.  Please keep in mind that this only applies when you are streaming your video outside your LAN (via the internet).  Performance within a LAN is great!

Hopefully this clears up some of the questions regarding what is needed to stream video from your computer.  As time goes on and bandwidth and CPUs increase in speed, this process will become quicker and easier.

Mon, 15 Nov 2010 17:29:00 -0800 ZumoCast Tip of the Week: Album Art http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumocast-tip-of-the-week-album-art http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumocast-tip-of-the-week-album-art

Anyone who has ever organized all their music can tell you what a tedious task it can be.  They can also tell you that the finishing touch to that task is making sure you have the album artwork for each song.  It makes the browsing experience just that much more complete.  When you go to stream music from ZumoCast you'll notice that the album art for some songs show up in the Music Tab, while it doesn't for others.  But you could've sworn all your music had album art before.  The explanation for this is quite simple.  The songs whose art you see appear have the pictures embedded in the file.   There are a multitude of free programs out there that can do this for you.  But it's REALLY tedious.  You need to go out and find the art yourself and then manually add them to the songs.  On the plus side, it becomes part of the file and travels with it wherever it goes.  iTunes has tried to make this process easier by searching for the album artwork and adding it automatically to each song.  However iTunes does not embed that data into the song file.  Instead, it uses a database to keep track of what art points to which song.  So the tip of the week is to try checking the "Grab artwork from iTunes" box.  Here's how:

1.  Right click on the ZumoCast icon in the task tray.

2.  Select Preferences.

3.  Go to the Settings tab on the right.

4.  Make sure "Grab artwork from iTunes" is checked.

5.  Check out your pretty album art in the ZumoCast Music tab on your iDevice.

Important note:  Mac users, you are off the hook.  This applies only to PC users.

Mon, 08 Nov 2010 08:58:00 -0800 ZumoDrive Vs. ZumoCast http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumodrive-vs-zumocast http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumodrive-vs-zumocast

We've received a lot of emails asking us what the difference is between ZumoDrive and ZumoCast.  Here is a more detailed description, along with the benefits and limitations of each Zumo product:

ZumoDrive:

You upload all of your files to our servers (known as the cloud).  Our servers are secure, so unless you give out your password, no one will have access to your data except you.  It's no different than logging into your web email (like Gmail).  The plus to ZumoDrive is the fact that since the data is in the cloud, you don't need to leave your computer running.  You will just stream the data down from our servers.  Another good thing about ZumoDrive is your data is backed up in 3 different data centers in 3 different geographic locations.  So you know you data is backed up.  Along with that, since you are streaming from our servers, the connection is MUCH quicker when you go to download your data.

The limiting factor to ZumoDrive really all boils down to cost.  It costs us, and in turn you, to keep space on the server as well as the bandwidth to access it.  The other factor is video.  Since our servers are hit with so many users, we do not support transcoded video when streaming to your devices.  You can, however, download the file, then view it.  Last but not least, you need to take the time to upload your data to our servers.  Depending on how much data, your initial upload time could take quite a while.

Summary:

Pros:

  • Your data is accessible anytime and anywhere you have an internet connection.
  • No need to leave your home computer on.
  • Your data is backed up on our servers.
  • High access speed to your data via our servers.

Cons:

  • Monthly cost.  You will need to pay for this service if you have a lot of files.
  • No video transcoding.
  • Time consuming to upload your data to our servers.

ZumoCast:

This is kind of the opposite of ZumoDrive.  You are serving the files from your own computer.  The benefit to this is basically unlimited space for a low cost.  You can keep buying more hard drives for your computer at a relatively low cost (at last check you could get a 2tb drive for $90).  You also do not have an upload process to go through.  The minute you select the files/folders you want to access, they are instantly available.  ZumoCast also has video transcoding.  So any video format is playable on your portable devices and the web interface.

The limitations to ZumoCast are that you have to leave your computer running and your internet connection to that computer needs to be available.  Lose either one, and you will not be able to access your data.  The only way around this is to use the download feature to transfer the data to your device locally.  Obviously that will take up space on the device as well as take some time to download depending on the size.  Since the files are hosted on your personal computer, you are on your own in terms of backup.  Last but not least, most personal internet connections do not have the fastest upload speeds.  So when you go to access your files, it could take some time to download them.  Keep in mind, however, that when streaming video from ZumoCast, your connection speed is taken into account and it will adjust the bitrate of the video to ensure smooth playback.

We also want to emphasize the fact that NONE of your data is kept on ZumoCast servers.  The servers are there just to tell your device where to stream data from and to also authenticate your account.  ZumoCast will choose the quickest way to get your data to you.  So if you are on a LAN, your data does not get streamed down via the internet.  It stays local.  Much faster and more secure.  If it does have to go out via the internet, rest assured that your data is encrypted during transfer.

Summary:

Pros:

  • Cheap space with no monthly cost.  Just add more drives and you instantly have more space.
  • No upload process.  Your files are ready to be accessed immediately.
  • Video transcoding allows you to view almost any video format on your iDevice device.

Cons:

  • You must leave your computer running in order to access your data.  A power outage would kick you off.
  • You internet connection must stay connected in order for you to access your data.
  • No backup is provided.  You must handle this yourself.
  • Most internet providers do not provide high upload speeds, so downloads to your device will be slower.  However, it’s usually fast enough for most use caes.

In the end, I think it's important to have a bit of both worlds.  For the files that are important to me, which I want to ensure constant access to, I upload to ZumoDrive.  Everything else, I just ZumoCast it.  I hope this helps clear up most of the confusion.  Feel free to try both ZumoDrive and ZumoCast since they are both free.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks!

Mon, 25 Oct 2010 12:44:00 -0700 ZumoDrive for iPad!! http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumodrive-for-ipad http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumodrive-for-ipad
The wait is over!  We want to thank everyone for their interest and patience in the iPad app for ZumoDrive.  Those of you who have been using ZumoCast will find the layout of ZumoDrive to be quite similar.  It’s important to note that this is a universal app so it’ll be the same install for your iPhone.  Here are a few of the cool features we’ve all come to love about ZumoDrive, that are now (IMO) better with all the screen real estate the iPad has to offer:
  • Music tab sorts all your music and syncs your playlists for easy access to your music.
  • Download feature allows you to download your files locally to your iPad for offline access.
  • Download transfer queue allows you to manage your download status.
  • Downloaded tab makes it easy for you to manage all your locally downloaded content.
  • Upload feature allows you to upload files from your device directly to ZumoDrive.
  • Share files in your ZumoDrive with others directly from your device.
  • View all your files (much easier now because of the iPad’s large screen) in the preview area and easily switch to fullscreen viewing.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or comments.  You can email us here:  support@zumodrive.com

Also, you can follow us on Twitter (@zumodrive) or Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/zumodrive) for our latest news and updates.

Thanks again!

Today we launch our new app ZumoCast!  As many of you know, ZumoCast is the newest member to the Zumo family.  I won't bore you with details about all our great features.  Instead I'll just give you the highlights.  Big picture:  You can now stream all your files directly from your PC to your iPad or iPhone (don't worry Android users, we have not forgotten you).

You'll notice that we have both a video and music tab in the app which will make viewing your media a great experience.  Please also check out the Download feature which allows you to download the content to your device locally.  This is particularly handy when you know you'll be in a situation where no net access is available (such as on a flight).  Our web interface has also improved great with the addition of the video and music tabs.

A special thanks goes out to all the users involved in our private beta.  We wouldn't have been able to catch all the bugs and issues without your help.  Last but certainly not least, thank you to all our users who have been patiently waiting for the public release!  We won't disappoint.

Tue, 27 Jul 2010 11:48:00 -0700 ZumoCast! http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumocast http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumocast Many of you have been wondering what we've been up to here at ZumoDrive over the past few months.  A common question we've gotten during this time is: When are you going to support iPad?  Well we finally have an answer to these questions:  Enter ZumoCast!  Today we are launching the private beta of our new product ZumoCast!  If I only had two words in which to describe what ZumoCast is they would be: Personal Cloud.

With ZumoCast you will have access to any of your files within seconds on your mobile device.  You will no longer have to wait for the files to upload to the cloud before accessing them.  Instead, your computer becomes your own personal cloud and streams the files directly to your device.  Our cloud-assisted peer-to-peer technology ensures the accessibility of your personal content from any location regardless of routers, firewalls, or connectivity levels that may exist there.

Along with all this we've incorporated our adaptive, on-demand transcoding technology as well.  This allows you to stream down and watch videos of any resolution and of any file type to your mobile device.  ZumoCast handles the transcoding and streaming on demand in real time, automatically adjusting your video to the best possible quality that your connection and device can support.

Currently we will be releasing ZumoCast on Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, and iPad platforms.  You will be able to stream content from your Mac or Pc to your iPhone/iPad, or access your data on another PC via the ZumoCast website (www.zumocast.com).  The website also supports video streaming.  ZumoCast will be available on other mobile platforms soon.

So what happens to ZumoDrive?  Nothing!  We are still working hard on ZumoDrive and adding new fixes and content all the time.  Over time ZumoDrive and ZumoCast will become increasingly integrated with many new exciting features.

Now the big question:  How much will ZumoCast cost?  During the beta period ZumoCast and all its features will be completely free.  When the beta stage is over, ZumoCast and its base features will remain free to our users.  Premium features will be available at an affordable price.

Here are just some of the sites with reviews and thoughts about ZumoCast:

How do you sign up for the ZumoCast beta?  Visit www.zumocast.com and submit your email address.  ZumoCast is currently in private beta, however you will be added to the list for the public beta.

We really hope everyone enjoys using ZumoCast.  Thank you for your continued support!

Tue, 11 May 2010 15:47:00 -0700 ZumoDrive 0.5.5 and 0.5.6 for webOS! http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumodrive-055-and-056-for-webos http://blog.zumodrive.com/zumodrive-055-and-056-for-webos Hey guys!  So there was a little miscommunication this morning about our release schedule for the webOS app.  However, for once in my life, this miscommunication was actually good for me and everyone else.  Here's why:

We actually have two releases out/coming out for webOS (I thought we only had one).  The current one if you don't have it already is 0.5.5.  Here are the fixes:

  • Fix for the deleted photos bug.  Once you delete photos off ZumoDrive you won't see them in the photos tab anymore.
  • Fix for playing music without music metadata.  If you have songs that don't have an artist, album and/or title they used to show up as "" in the music tab.  If you had a lot of these it would've looked like there was no music in the music tab until you scrolled down.  Now instead of seeing "" you will see "Unknown Album", "Unknown Artist" or "Filename.mp3" depending on your view.

The second update for you is still pending Palm’s approval.  It should be out in the next few days.  Version 0.5.6 has:

  • Shuffle mode fix.  If you selected "Shuffle" when at the top most view of the music tab, four songs would play and then shuffle would stop.  Now it will keep playing.  :)

That does it for now.  Stay tuned for the Android update.  Thanks!!

Fri, 30 Apr 2010 16:46:00 -0700 Big Block Of Cheese Day http://blog.zumodrive.com/big-block-of-cheese-day http://blog.zumodrive.com/big-block-of-cheese-day

Zumocheese

"President Andrew Jackson, in the main foyer of his White House, had a big block of cheese.  The block of cheese was huge--over two tons. And it was there for any and all who might be hungry.

Jackson wanted the White House to belong to the people, so from time to time, he opened his doors to those who wished an audience.

It is in the spirit of Andrew Jackson that I, from time to time, ask senior staff to have face-to-face meetings with those people representing organizations who have a difficult time getting our attention. I know the more jaded among you see this as something rather beneath you. But I assure you that listening to the voices of passionate Americans is beneath no one, and surely not the people's servants."

Fans of the Bartlet administration are most certainly familiar with Big Block Of Cheese Day.  Here at ZumoDrive we've decided to adopt this famous West Wing day, but also leave it open for any day, not just one.  So if you happen to be in the San Francisco Bay Area and would like to sit down for a little bit and discuss our product and your thoughts, we'd be more than happy to oblige.  Please email us at:  meetus@zumodrive.com to set up a meeting!  Can't wait to meet our users!

I’d like to apologize for the recent flood of ZumoDrive updates on your Facebook profile.  I’ve been busy today updating our Facebook page with pictures of crazy little events that happen here at ZumoHQ.  It should give you a little insight into the insane personalities that bring you the ZumoDrive product.  If you have a chance and are curious, please check them out.  It’s painfully obvious that we are pet lovers here.  Looks like Facebook has changed their paradigm a little too.  The “Become a Fan” button is no longer.  Instead, everything will be “Like”.  So if you haven’t already, follow us on Facebook by “liking” us.  I’ll be updating it with photos and videos as we go.  Thanks!

Wed, 07 Apr 2010 17:53:22 -0700 iPad, uPad, we all scream for iPad! http://blog.zumodrive.com/ipad-upad-we-all-scream-for-ipad http://blog.zumodrive.com/ipad-upad-we-all-scream-for-ipad
Ipad_blog

For those of you lucky enough to get your hands on one of these great new toys, can I be your friend?  Actually, we received our iPad today here at ZumoDrive HQ.  I don’t need to tell you how many fingerprints are now covering that beautiful screen.  Of course the first thing we did was install ZumoDrive. *wink wink*  I’m happy to say that the ZumoDrive app for the iPhone works great on the iPad.  So those of you who are already running out of space (probably because you’ve bought so many games and movies) can save a good portion of it by streaming all your music and photos via ZumoDrive.  I won’t lie though, the interface isn’t the prettiest thing due to having to stretch it out on that GIANT screen,  but it’s very usable.  Is ZumoDrive planning on building an app for the iPad?  One that is really pretty and amazing?  You’ll have to wait and see.  *sneaky grin*
